I’ve been wanting to do something different with my nails. I wanted something to spice them up. We’re not talking the same boring nail color. I wanted my nails to reflect me. Something with glitz, glam, and lots of sparkle.

So, one day while browsing my favorite site on the net, Pinterest, I noticed all of the beautiful nail ideas. Glitter is a BIG deal around the holidays and rightfully so…..glitter is fun! But my problem is that I’ve never really found a glitter nail polish I really liked. Though I’ve tried, I just couldn’t get the right “sparkle” I wanted with regular glitter nail polish or maybe it’s because I just haven’t found the right one yet.

Nonetheless, the idea hit me during one of the kidlet’s homeschool lessons….why don’t I just use regular glitter! So I started to experiment. First by adding glitter to a clear nail polish I had….nope that didn’t work. Then I thought why don’t I just apply the glitter directly to my nail….yes, that’s it!

So here is a brief tutorial on how I created my glittery nails (which I am now utterly obsessed with btw):
Note: you will probably be seeing a lot of these posts, as I figure out different ways to use glitter

How to Apply Glitter to Nails

  • Step 1: start with clean nails. Working with only one nail at a time….Apply one coat of your favorite clear fingernail polish. Allow to dry slightly until tacky but not wet (the time on this will vary based on whatever nail polish you choose to use).
  • Step 2: choose your glitter. I chose a very fine glitter in a lovely shade of purple. There could be two ways one could apply the glitter to nails: 1. dip nail in the glitter (I would push the glitter onto my nail after doing this to make sure that it is stuck) or 2. (this is the method I used) using one of the fingers on my opposite hand, I would dip the pad of one finger into the glitter then would press it onto my tacky nail, repeating until my nail was completely covered with glitter. I didn’t worry about it sticking to my finger or making a mess because I could clean it up in step 4.
  • Step 3: Once glitter is applied and nails are completely dried. Apply another coat of clear nail polish to nails (little flakes of glitter may transfer onto the brush, so keep this in mind. Use a polish you might not mind getting glitter in) and allow to dry.
  • Step 4: Once everything is dry, wash your hand with soap and water. This will get off most of the excess glitter. Any remaining glitter should be able to be removed with fingernail polish remover.

Very cute! If you're looking for an already glittery nail polish, look for Milani. Their 3D Holographic & One Coat Glitter polishes have tons of glitter and great colors. The bright red is great for Christmas.

That is a good suggestion. I didn't even think of that. I bought a variety pack of fine glitter to use on my nails so I haven't tried to use regular craft glitter.
