Paint an Interior Door with Chalkboard Paint for a Home Office, Bathroom, Homeschool Room

August 22, 2013

When it comes to chalkboard paint, the word obsessed comes to mind. I’ve tackled several DIY projects in my home transforming ordinary household items into writeable surfaces with chalkboard paint. Here are a few past projects you might be interested in checking out:

  • DIY Chalkboard Crate
  • Chalkboard Paint Coffee Table
  • Homeschool Cubby
  • Chalkboard Bookcase
  • Bloggers Desk

With the start of a new school year, what better time to tackle another DIY project than now.

The doors at the entrance of my home office were just a bit boring. My home office is a shared space also serving as the boys homeschool room and family entertainment area. This multi-functional room gets used a lot, so why not make it an enjoyable space to want to be in.

I was able to paint both doors with a small can of black chalkboard paint that can be found at Walmart or other paint supply stores. The door on the left leads to the bathroom. What is so fun about chalkboard paint is now I can label the doors. When I’m blogging in my home office or the kids are taking a test in homeschool, I can write on the outside what we are doing letting those that want to enter to do so quietly. Or labeling the bathroom for guests to find their way. The back of the door can be used to write myself notes or daily reminders. The kids can use this space to figure out math problems for school or just to draw a picture for Mom. The ideas and uses for this writeable surface are just a piece of chalk away.

What uses have you found for chalkboard paint?

For those that are wondering, the chalk holder is actually a scrapbook page element that I simply tacked onto the wall. It is a pink, cloth, button pocket that works great as a chalk holder. Another great idea would be to paint an exterior door with chalkboard paint like fellow blogging friend, Amy at MomAdvice did in her backyard

Drool. I keep meaning to do this. I could never figure out where I’d want to put the chalkboard paint. Now I know: on the backs of my kids’ bedroom doors! This way I wouldn’t have to see the “art”, but they — and their friends — would get a kick out of it. :) Maybe I’ll give my daughter a bucket of chalkboard paint for her 9th birthday, which is coming up in October. It sounds like a weird gift, but she’d LOVE it, and would love helping!

That is a GREAT idea, Jenn. Love it! I’m always on the lookout for another chalkboard paint project to add to my to-do list :)
