I confess, I have an obsession…a POPCORN obsession. I have eaten popcorn every single day for the past 2 weeks. My lovely mother bought me a most covetted popcorn maker and I have been using the heck out of it. I just can’t seem to get enough. I even skip regular, home-made meals to eat popcorn. What is wrong with me? I have even started to “doctor up” the plain popcorn to cover in movie butter, chocolate, and now I’m attempting kettle corn. Kettle Corn? Yes, I am determined to figure out how to make this sweet yet salty treat at home. What started the kettle corn craze? Well over the weekend the p-nut, hubby, and I met my best friend at the local flea market. We were there for the soul purpose to find my friend a fake burberry purse. We had no such luck in that department but we did on the other hand get ME a new cell phone cover and some KETTLE CORN! The kettle corn is so good and the cell phone cover is so cute! I just don’t want to have to spend $3 a bag every week to soothe my craving. So I am attempting to make it at home so that I do not have to waste money.
I spent all day yesterday attempting to recreate my craving with no such luck. Everytime I would do it the sugar would start to burn on the bottom of the pan about the same time the popcorn would start to pop resulting in burnt covered popcorn…lol, not a good mix let me tell ya. Then I opted for the idea to air pop the popcorn at my movie butter then sprinkle it with cinnamon, sugar, and salt. “That was too grainy” says the hubby. But that was the closest one that I could get. I will attempt again today. Like I said I am determined, and will not rest until I have successfully recreated kettle corn.
Since it is going to be raining from now until Saturday what better time to create some recipes. In house news, I’m tackling Mount Washmore. The most dreaded time of the week when I gotta do laundry but there is no better time than when it is cold and rainy to get the mound under control. The weather we have been having lately is the kind of weather that you don’t want to get out in even if you have to. You start coming up with excuses of why you have to stay at home like tackling Mount Washmore and Mount Dishmore. After it has been raining for a while that is the time when my house is the most spectacular. Everything has been cleaned, organized, and put away in its particular place. You don’t want to get out of the house so why not make the house look good.
Alright enough ramblings, here are some photos of my new cell phone cover and my new love, kettle corn [well there is only a fourth of a bag left now]…

Kettle corn is reallly easy to make from scratch. I’ll post a recipe the next time I make some. All you need is uncooked popcorn, oil, and sugar (and a big, heavy saucepan or dutch oven). The secret is adding the sugar to the oil and popcorn before you cook it.

I’ve tried the way that you are suggesting anisaerah but for some reason the sugar keeps burning right before the popcorn starts popping so I get burnt covered popcorn. I am cooking it on medium heat not high…i dunno what the deal is. Look forward with you helping me conquer kettle corn.

hmm… use the heaviest pan you have (with a lid), and heat the oil and the popcorn (3 Tb oil to 1/2 cup popcorn makes about 10 cups popped or so) over medium high heat, covered, but vented slightly, until the popcorn starts popping. Crefullt remove the lid and add a few heaping Tb of sugar, stir, and cover as before. Put on some oven mitts and shake the pan off the heat every 10 seconds or so until all the corn is popped. That’s how I always make it, and I’ve never had the sugar burn.

i’ve figured it out!!
use splenda. 4 packets, 1/8 cup oil, 1/8 cup butter, sprinkling of salt…that’s it! and that explains why all the microwave versions use splenda…sugar burns!

Hey just happened to stumble upon your site here is an awsome recipe for Kettle Corn!
Kettle Corn
Ingredients:
1/4 cup corn oil
1/4 cup popcorn
1/4 cup sugar
salt
Directions:
Use a decent size pot (with a lid) and pour in enough oil to have about an 1/8″ covering the bottom. Don’t use too much oil. Too much oil will sog the popped popcorn and you’ll probably get sick to your stomach when you eat it. Dump in enough popcorn to make a single layer in the pot. Put the pot on medium high heat. When you see the corn start to get excited but before it starts to pop, quickly pour in the sugar as evenly as you can across the top. Cover and shake back and forth to pop (like Jiffy Pop). When you pull it off you need to slightly salt it. You can’t pop every single kernel because you would scorch the popcorn. Also pouring in the sugar too soon tends to make the popcorn scorch more easily. If you pour it in too late, the sugar stays granular and grainy. Also get the popped popcorn out of the pot as quickly as possible to prevent scorching.
