Disclosure: My trip to California and attendance at the first Sony Mommy Blogger Event was sponsored and provided by Sony.
Departure Day: April 17, 2008
The day that I have been anticipating for the past month is finally here. I am on my way to the airport to board my first flight ever! Well I flew in an airplane for about 30 minutes when I was a wee little tot but that doesn’t count, to me at least. I am so nervous. I am totally faaaah-reaking OUT!!!
I can’t believe this is happening. It all seems like a dream. I know I probably sound like the biggest dork known to man and completely immature for my age but stuff like this doesn’t happen to people like me. It just doesn’t. This IS the biggest trip of my life and I will be enjoying (and photographing) every minute of it!!!
Hubby will be taking care of the kidlets while I am away. The boys are a handful but I am more than confident that he can handle them, although he will probably be begging me to come back tomorrow. LOL. Men are so funny when it comes to taking care of the kids. If you think I am freaking out, you should see my husband he is worse off than me.
Well it is almost time to head to the airport. Going to check through my luggage one last time to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything and then I’m off! I’ll give you all updates tonight.
Arriving in California for the Sony Mommy Blogger Event
I thought that I could handle it. I thought that I would be cool, calm, and collected. I thought that I could go on a nice five day trip without looking back. Leaving the boys with my husband wasn’t easy. Being on the opposite end of the United States makes things worse. Having that sinking feeling in your gut when you get off the plane, that brings tears to your eyes.
After landing, I talked with my husband and I couldn’t help but start crying. Hearing stories of pnut running around the house saying “I can’t find her” breaks my heart. My pnut is looking for me and I’m not there. *heart breaks into a million tiny pieces* I miss my squishy baby and his sweet kisses. I’m sure I sound like the worst sap right now and even possibly the biggest wuss, but this is my first time without my children and I am a million miles away from them, I have the right to freak out and cry a little….right? Please tell me it is OK to cry. Besides, I have to get it out now before I make an even worse idiot of myself tomorrow.
I tried to play the cool card, I really did. I was strong in front of my husband but really I am falling apart.
Well, I’m being a girly mess right now missing my children so I am going to go to bed and sleep it off. Wish me luck as I have a HUGE day planned tomorrow.
Day 1: April 18, 2008
Today is the day. The big announcement of the “secret trip” I have been talking about for the past month. I am in California attending the Sony Mommy Blogger Event. I was one of only 15 women chosen to attend. I feel honored and so very lucky to be here. Sony has flown us all across the country and put us in this ritzy hotel. It all feels like a dream. I don’t belong here. I am so far out of my element that it is not even funny.
I have less than an hour before I have to be downstairs to meet all of the other mommy bloggers. I will get a list to you of all the other people that are going to be here as well so you can do a little blog hopping if you would like.
Day 2: April 19, 2008
Well day two was short and sweet. We reviewed photos that we had taken with our new cameras and had them critiqued. The Sony Mommy Blogger Event has been such a blessing to me. I am so lucky to have been a part of this. Even though, I was fairly shy at the event, I stood back and watch all of the other mommy bloggers and it was so good to be in a room full of women that all shared the same interest. There were no stupid questions or the feeling that people didn’t know what you were talking about. We all spoke the same geeky language and all understood exactly what the other was saying.
Since I am originally from the east coast, the time change is awful. I am so tired and drained. My brain is crammed full of important information that I have nothing more I can take other than getting a good nights rest.
What happened at the First Sony Mommy Blogger Event
So you want to know what went on at the Sony Mommy Blogger Event. Well let me tell you about the fabulous time that we had. I was one of only 15 mommy bloggers chosen to attend this exclusive event. I was the young, shy blogger of the group but I loved learning and watching the other women interact. I never knew bloggers could talk so much!!!
The awesome group of bloggers that attended were…
Plain Jane Mom
Domestic Diva: ME!
Hi Tech Mommy
A Mamas Rant
Paul n Laura
5 Minutes for Mom
Mommin it Up
On the first day we spent a large chunk of time introducing each other. Some bloggers talked a lot about themselves while others, like me, just said a short introduction and passed it off to the next blogger. After each blogger was introduced we were then introduced to the “higher ups” as I would call them or the “sony people” to you. After all introductions were complete we got to open our “prizes”.
The first prize that we got was a Sony Cybershot in a super cute blue color. Yes, I am a girl and yes I like my accessories to have colors. The second gadget we unwrapped was a Sony Alpha Camera. At this point I began to freak out internally because OMG, I have been wanting a SLR camera since forever but have never had the money to treat myself to one. Now I actually have a swank SLR camera that takes the best shots!!! The third item in our goody bag was a Sony Handycam. Which means easier ways to video tape events and the possibility of “me-todays” coming back. (metodays are daily video casts of what I am doing during my day).
Once we opened our new gadgets we were given a quick run though of the products with Sony professionals. After we got familiar with the products we were then introduced to the famous wedding photographer, Me Ra Koh. Me Ra is such a sweet, kind person. She took all of us under her little photographers wing and taught us all how to take great shots. She told us about how she got into photography and how she met her husband. Me Ra is a sweet soul and I feel so very lucky to be one of the people that got to meet her in person.
We had dinner at a 4 star restaurant, the kind of place that has a gazillion forks and twenty different glasses. I’m not a fancy smancy type of gal so the four star hotel and upscale dinning really blew my mind.
Day two of the Mommy Blogger Event was spent discussing photographs that we took with the Sony Alpha camera as well as getting tips on blogging and feedback on how we liked the items. Day two was only half a day long, I really wish we could have spent more time with Me Ra and the others.
Day 3: April 20, 2008
We took a trip to the San Diego Zoo while in California. We were in the Ape/Monkey section when this one particular Ape was pretty sick of all the people taking his photograph. So being the ape that he is, he walks right up to the glass gets on all fours and points his butt right up to the glass window!!!
It was if he was saying “So you wanna take my picture, do ya? Well take a picture of this! *shoves butt up to glass”.
While at the San Diego Zoo, I bought a little hedgehog to remember my trip to California for the Sony Mommy Blogger Event. I was trying to think of a name for him to remember the time that I had out there. My father suggested that I name him “Bouji” in honor of the four star hotel and meals that we ate.
I am a very down to earth, southern lady and to put me in an environment that required me to eat something with a different fork and drink from more than one glass was completely out of my element. We had one waiter at a four star restaurant that we ate at that was completely enveloped in the “bouji lifestyle”. We had our five gazillion utensils all laying neatly in a row. I immediately flicked one of the spoons in the middle so that it was sideways just to disrupt the order of things. Immediately “bouji waiter guy” came running over to our table and corrected my misaligned spoon as if the planet were to stop spinning had the spoon not been in its perfect place. Each time he came to our table he adjusted the spoon and each time I turned it the wrong direction when he left.
I thought it was funny to mess with the guy a little bit to see how often he would correct my “southern bad habit”. Life doesn’t have to be that serious. I’m definitely not the type of person that could ever be famous. I couldn’t stand people waiting on me hand and foot, nor did I care for people doing things for me like opening car doors. I mean seriously, I got this all by my little self.
It’s Been Fun Cali, but I’m ready to leave…
Five days in California, really is a long a time. I thought the time would go by quickly but when you miss your husband and children the time practically stands still. I can’t wait to see my family. I missed my family so much.
The Sony Mommy Blogger Event kicked ass! I can’t wait to attend another one in the future. Now that I know sort of what to expect, I will probably be more open.
We had to get up really early this morning, like 3 am, in order to get to the airport in time for our plane to leave. Since we are traveling from the west coast to the east we will lose 3 hours on the flight. Switching back to Eastern Standard Time will probably be a challenge for my body since it has already started to get used to pacific time. Uugghh vacation is so physically distressing.
With the Sony Mommy Blogger Event and touring San Diego, California overall this “vacation” hasn’t been all that bad. I’ve learned a lot, meet a group of great women, and finally saw the west coast. Although I would never live in California, it was great to come for a visit and pretend like I was an “important person” for once in my life.
