I had the opportunity to watch a Walmart Commercial being filmed. I was asked to checkout the video shoot and experience all of the behind the scenes action. I spent my day being a “fly on the wall”.
The commercial I was able to watch was a local Walmart Commercial where they compare “baskets of savings”. The day started with meeting a local Mom. Yes, a real Mom. Not an actress. While she is paid for her participation in the commercial shoot, the stories exchanged between her and I between takes about our children & our lives where completely genuine. She is a Mom just like I am a Mom.
First on the agenda for the day is to shop a competitors store. We accompanied the Mom to a local competitors store as she shopped for items she would normally buy. No one told her what to buy, she just bought items she would normally pick up at that particular store.
After shopping the competitor, it was time to go to the local Walmart to comparison shop. Now of course Walmart and competitor stores will carry different items so to do a real “comparison” shop with the Mom they have to check to make sure Walmart carried THE exact, same item as well as make sure the item was in-stock for filming. Once the list of comparable items were narrowed down, from the original shopping trip the Mom did at the competitors store, it was time to start filming the commercial.
After a little hair and makeup, who doesn’t want to look glamorous on camera, it was time for the Mom to take her mark. All morning excitement was building for the first product comparison shop. Just like the Mom being filmed, I was anxious to witness the possible savings one could have just by shopping at Walmart. The first product price comparison was revealed and I was a bit shocked. The savings on the items they were comparing weren’t just a couple of cents but a big enough difference that one would automatically notice. The whole time I was in awe over the savings just by changing the store the Mom bought the item from. The price difference between the competitor’s prices and Walmart’s Everyday Low Prices were definitely noticeable in real life. By the end of the day, one couldn’t help but anticipate what her overall savings would be.

The turn around time on these commercials is simply amazing. Within the same week of filming, the commercial is shot, edited, and aired on local television channels. And yes, just like with many other commercials there are multiple takes to produce the best shot for television but I think the prices shine by themselves.
If you are like me you’ve seen the commercials on TV and thought to yourself “is this for real”? After experiencing the savings the Mom in the commercial had, I can’t help but want to do my own comparison shopping.
