Family GAME Night with Walmart’s Gamer Network HQ

I don’t think I’d call myself a “gamer”. I’m more of an occasional gamer versus a gaming enthusiast. I look at video games as a form of entertainment sort of like watching television or a movie. If there were more hours in the day, I might could possibly squeeze in a little gaming time for myself. But because there is always laundry to do or dishes to wash, I’m left to playing a video game only occasionally.

At our house we are BIG on family movie nights and try to have one at least once a week! When Walmart presented me with the idea of a Family Game Night I knew my boys would be THRILLED! Mom…..playing video games….it’s gotta be fun, right?

While I don’t get the chance to play video games that often, my kidlets still like to keep me in the loop on what games they have had their eye on. As a Mom, I of course like to do a little research on the game before deciding if we, as a family, should get it or not. Walmart recently announced their Gamer Network HQ as a go-to-spot for Moms to ask questions about video games and get answers from real, live gamers. I’m definitely going to bookmark this resource if I have any gaming questions in the future.

After we made our video game picks and picked up some snacks, with a giftcard provided by Walmart, it was time for our own Family GAME Night. Like family movie nights at our house, our go-to snacks are usually from the Marketside section at Walmart. We can’t get enough of their take and bake pizzas. At our Family Game Night we opted to have Marketside’s cheese pizza, philly cheese steak pizza, and some pretzel bread sticks. Yum!

The first game we played as a family was Just Dance 4 which uses the Kinect for XBox 360. When choosing a game like Just Dance 4 you definitely have to make sure you have enough room where you play the game because you’ll be moving all over the place. I loved that I didn’t have to hold a controller when we were dancing because of the use of the Kinect. The Just Dance 4 game was a huge hit at our house. My oldest son especially loved it. After several songs you will definitely be sweating! Also, we found it funny that at the end of dancing to a song, you are able to play back video or even see pictures of you and your family/friends dancing. I may not be the greatest dancer in the world, but I still enjoy dance games like Just Dance 4. But after dancing for a while we needed a rest so we started to play our next Family Game Night pick.

Our second game pick for Family Game Night was Skylanders Giants. I had heard about Skylanders Giants before but had yet to try out it out. I am so glad we picked this one for Family Game Night, it was by far the biggest hit amongst the boys. Honestly, I don’t know who is more thrilled about it the kidlets or my husband! Skylanders Giants starts with a “starter kit that includes the game, the must-have “portal” and 3 different character figurines to get you started. When a character is placed on the “portal” it is added to the game with a max of 2 characters able to play at a time. The different characters do different things and are needed to complete different tasks throughout the game. I also like that we are able to start different games, so the boys can have their game that they play together and my husband and I can have our own adventure. My boys and husband have already begun to collect the Skylanders characters. To say this game is loved in our house would be an understatement.

We had so much fun during our Family Game Night that I’m seriously considering making this a regular family activity. I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for more family friendly games that we could all play together.
