My closet. Where do I even begin. My closet is something that I’ve never really been proud of. It is just sort of there. It is always the last project on my to-do list except for today. Today my closet FINALLY got the makeover that it deserved!!!!
As you can see in the photo above, my closet is an absolute and utter wreck. Today we won’t be discussing the ugly wood paneling I have to look at every time I go in there. No, that is a project to tackle on another day. Today we are just going to tackle the functionality of my closet which it so desperately needs.
First things first, I needed some supplies. Walmart so graciously provided me with a giftcard, as a part of the Walmart Moms, to pick up a few new organizational items to help transform my closet. Here is what I picked up to get me started and on my way to closet organizational bliss:
- Mainstays Collapsible Storage Cubes (pack of 3)
- (2) Mainstays Storage Bag
- Mainstays Flexible Tub
- Mainstays 6 Shelves Hanging Closet Organizer
- Better Homes and Gardens Set of 2 Tie & Belt Non-slip Hangers
- Zebra Print Flocked Non-slip Hangers (6 pack)
3 collapsible boxes to organize hats, sunglasses, and extra waist ties
Now that I had the supplies that I needed the moment I dreaded the most was here, time to clean out the closet. I pulled everything out of my closet till there was nothing but blank shelves and bare rods. This gave me a clean “canvas” to work with. While I was cleaning out my closet I decided to donate some more of my clothes that I no longer wear. I had donated a whole bunch of clothes a couple of months ago and was glad to get rid of even more stuff.
If you can’t tell in the photos, my closet is actually located in the basement. I know, it’s a bit odd. But this is the largest closet in the house and it is also the only walk-in closet in the house. Trying to figure out how to best utilize this space is a bit tricky but I think are figuring out how to make it work.
I pulled my shoe caddy complete out of my closet which gave me a lot more floor space. My shoe organizer now is just to the right of my closet entrance. On top I placed the 3 collapsible storage bins that I now organize my sunglasses, hats, and extra waist ties into.
These hangers are my favorite!!!!
Next, it was time to start hanging up my clothes again. When I saw these zebra frocked hangers in Walmart, they just screamed my name. They are so cute! And the best part is that they are non-slip! I’ve never used this type of hanger before but after hanging up several of my blouses that typically fall right off the hanger and saw that they didn’t budge I was sold! Since keeping shirts on hangers is one of my biggest problems, I decided to use the zebra frocked hangers on just my shirts. I soon found out that i had run out of hangers so of course I had to go pick up some more of these awesome hangers on my own. Between donating and using these hangers I have so much more room on my hanging bar now.
To take organizing a step further, when hanging my shirts I organized them by color. I hung my shirts and blouses in color order- ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). That way when I’m looking for a particular color top, I can just go to the red section or the blue section to pull the perfect top to match my outfit.
I also picked up some belt and tie organizers at Walmart. Granted I don’t wear ties but this particular organizational item came in a two pack so I used one to hang my belts and the other one to hang up my scarves. I have my belts on the end of the middle hanging rod and the scarves are hung between my shirts and cardigans/cover ups.
A place for everything, even sweaters!
Next, I hung my dresses and jackets on the first hanging bar since they are the longest items in my closet. To separate between the two different types of clothing I put the 6-shelve hanging organizer. In the hanging organizer or items I don’t necessarily want on hangers like knit sweaters. Before they were on the top shelf in the back of my closet way out of my reach so they didn’t get worn that often. Now they are front and center so I’m more likely to add them to an outfit.
An easy to carry small laundry hamper and storage of off season clothes and handbags not currently not being used.
One of the problems with having my closet in the basement is that I have to lug all of my dirty clothes upstairs to wash them. I’ve tried several different type of laundry hampers but most of them are too large and too heavy when they have clothes in them to carry up our steep basement stairs. So when I was at Walmart and saw this small, durable flexible bin I knew it would be the perfect thing to toss my dirty clothes into for laundry day. I placed it in the corner of my closet out of the way but yet still easily accessible.
Since I moved my shoe organizer out of my closet, I had room for another storage item that I desperately needed. I used two of the Mainstays Jumbo Storage bags to organize my out of season clothes and handbags. I have a lot of handbags and now they are out of the way but I can still easily find them when I want to switch out my bag. Also when spring and summer rolls around I can easily switch out my winter clothes with my summer wardrobe that is stored in the other jumbo storage bag.
Ahhhh, I can breath now. Look at all of the room!
Phew! Have you been keeping up? To organize my closet it took a couple of days but I think the end result is awesome! I love all of the room that I have in my closet now. And I also love that everything has a place. It feels good to start the new year with a clean, organized closet.
It’s amazing what organizing can do.
Here is a wide view of my closet area. You can see my shoe organizer on the right with the 3 collapsible bins on top. Since this closet doesn’t have any doors on it I have a tension rod with some sheer curtains hung between the door frame just to close it off a bit when I’m not using it. So what do you think? Do you have any tips on how I could better utilize this under the stairs closet?
