Have you ever seen those hair salons inside of Walmart stores and wondered what they are all about? As a part of the Walmart Moms, my boys and I were given the opportunity to visit one of those salons near us and get our hair cut. SmartStyle is a salon exclusively in Walmart stores.
I’ve mentioned before how busy the beginning of a new school year can be. Adjusting to a new schedule, shopping for school supplies, and finding that perfect first day of school outfit are just some of the busy activities going on when one thinks of heading back to school. With to-do’s on a daily basis it’s hard to find time to get a haircut. When I called my local SmartStyle salon, I was surprised to find out that you don’t need an appointment to get your haircut there. So when my schedule wasn’t so busy I was able to swing by the salon for both the boys and I to get our hair cut. We opted to go to the salon first thing in the morning on a Saturday. We figured if we got there early that it wouldn’t be busy. And we were right! SmartStyle was able to see us right away. At the time there were only two stylist working, so both of my boys were able to get their haircuts at the same time!
Both boys were eager for their first haircuts in a “real” salon, as they would say. Typically either I or my husband will cut their hair at home since they are both fairly young. But for once, it was nice to be able to sit back and watch as the boys got their hair cut. While all stylist will be different, I like how the stylists we visited at our local SmartStyle did a great job of listening to how we wanted the boys hair cut. The stylist that cut my oldest son’s hair was great in the fact that even though I couldn’t remember what number clipper guard I normally use to cut his hair she cut his hair with the largest guard first then asked me if I wanted it a bit shorter until we eventually figured out the perfect number. My oldest’s sons hair has very tight curls but when cut at the right length will lay down flat which he really likes. She was able to cut it exactly how he likes it without being too short which I was a bit worried about before arriving at the salon. I also loved that my oldest son’s stylist was very friendly. I loved hearing her talk about her son while she cut my son’s hair.
My little one is a bit on the shy side but he loved getting his hair cut in a “big salon” as well. With my youngest, we like to keep his hair a bit on the longer side as he has looser curls than his older brother. I explained to the stylist how we generally cut the sides and the back of his hair shorter than the top and that we leave the top long to just above his eyebrows. With scissors and a comb she achieved exactly that. When my youngest hopped out of the chair with his newly trimmed surfer hair, you could see in his little face how proud he was of his new hair cut. Later he told me that he “loves his handsome hair”.
After the boys were done with their hair cuts they sat down next to my Mom while I hopped into the chair to get my hair cut. The stylist that cut my oldest son’s hair also cut mine as well. It’s been a while since I’ve been in a salon, myself. I think the last time I went to a salon my hair was at my chin. So you can probably imagine, my hair was desperate for some professional attention. I brought along a few photos of some styles that I liked and the general direction I wanted my cut to go. Before leaving the house I washed, dried, and quickly straightened my hair before running out the door. But thanks to southern humidity it was pretty frizzy by the time I got to the salon so I made sure to explain to the stylist my hair texture which is wavy/curly and that I like to straighten it with a flat iron whenever I get the chance (read: when I have time). I also explained to her that my hair shrinks quite a bit when it dries so she opted to cut my hair dry which was a first for me. My stylist did a good job of making my hair look healthy again which was my ultimate goal. It’s amazing what a hair cut can do for your hair! Like with my oldest son, I liked how she really listened to what I wanted and shared lots of tips and recommendations for products to get the most out of my style. She cut my hair with long layers and side swept bangs, which was what I wanted. My stylist also offered to wash and style my hair for me after my hair cut, but I declined because I had just washed my hair before going to the salon and the best part of a new hair cut for me is being able to style it myself at home. So in the after photo, you’ll see I styled it with a slight wave using a curling iron. I’m not sure how many inches she cut off of the length, but I like how the slightly shorter style helps my hair look a lot healthier. Hopefully, I won’t wait so long between hair cuts next time.
Overall, we had a good experience at SmartStyle. While every stylist will be different, I liked the stylists that cut our hair and how well they listened to what we wanted. Most of all I liked the price. At SmartStyle, my boys hair cuts were $10.95 each and mine was $15.50. The next time my hair needs a trim or one of the boys wants a new style, we will probably go to SmartStyle for an affordable hair cut.
