Whose ready for another easy diy tutorial? I’ve already shared several different Valentine’s Day ideas with you all from affordable gift ideas for guys to jewelry perfect for date night. I was asked as a part of the Walmart Moms to share a Valentine’s Day craft idea with you guys. With the giftcard provided I went to my local Walmart to buy all of the supplies that I needed. This craft is super simple to do and is something that can be used to decorate your home for the holiday year after year.
When shopping for supplies, I was so excited to find out that Walmart carries pillow forms in their craft department. Not only are they affordable but they also come in a variety of different sizes and shapes. Alternatively, if you are unable to find pillow forms or they are sold out, also check out the home decor section at Walmart as well. They often sell affordable solid throw pillows in a variety of colors that would also be a good option for stenciling. I have a feeling this is just going to be a start to many DIY home decor throw pillows in my future.
The supplies you’ll need to make your own DIY Sweetheart Pillow are:
(products available at Walmart)
- Poly-Fil 14in x 14in Square Craft pillow form ($6.97)
- FolkArt Enamel Acrylic Paint- Parisian Pink ($1.97)
- FolkArt Extreme Glitter Acrylic Paint- Jellybean Pink ($1.97)
- Plaid FolkArt Laser Cut Painting Stencil in the shape of a heart 6in x 6in (available at Walmart) or any other heart shaped stencil the size that you would like
- Paint brushes
First, on a protected surface lay your pillow out flat. Place your stencil in the center of your pillow. Hold the stencil steady with one hand as you trace around the outside of the heart stencil very faintly with a pencil. Do not make the pencil line too dark or it may be difficult to cover up with paint later. Alternatively, you can tape the stencil to the pillow to hold it steady and trace around the stencil that way as well. Basically you just want a simple heart in the center of your pillow as a guide for painting. The lazer cut stencil available at Walmart does have a very pretty, intricate design detail to it so that could be an option as well when tracing out the heart. But for this tutorial we are just tracing the outside of the heart because we want to paint a solid heart onto our pillow as a home decor accent piece. The great part about these laser cut stencils is that they can be used over and over again. So save them in your craft drawer. You never know when you’ll use them again.
Once the heart has been stenciled onto the center of your pillow form, then it is time to paint. Squeeze a dollop of the solid acrylic paint onto a paper plate. Very carefully with either a flat edge brush or a very fine paint brush paint the outside over top of the pencil line. Once the outline is painted then fill in the entire heart with the solid acrylic paint color of your choice. I chose a beautiful pink color but one could also do a red with a complimenting glitter color as well. The dark pink color is our base color so that the shine of our glitter paint will be more intense.
Allow the solid acrylic paint color to dry completely. According to the package directions, it is recommended to allow each coat to dry for an hour. While the first coat is drying, rinse all of the paint out of your paint brush and set it aside. After an hour has passed its onto adding the glitter. Just like with our solid paint color, squeeze a good amount of the glitter acrylic paint onto a paper plate. Work from the outside in by carefully painting the outside line of the heart with your brush and then filling in the entire heart with glitter paint. Allow the coat of paint to dry for one hour. The glitter paint is clear as it dries with sparkles of glitter. Applying another coat of glitter paint and allowing to dry would yield a more glittered result.
How cute does this “Sweetheart” pillow look? It’s adorable just used as a throw pillow on the couch for that little touch of something for Valentine’s Day. The best part is that this craft was easy to do and that all the supplies were easy to find at Walmart. One could make several different colors of hearts on various sized throw pillows or just one, the look is up to you. With so many snow days forcing us all to have to stay indoors this winter, an easy craft like this is great to have on hand for something to do to pass the time and add a little something homemade to your home.
Remember in a previous post how I was telling ya’ll all about Walmart’s newest commitment to American jobs? While painting this DIY project, I looked down and noticed on the bottle of paint that I was using that it was actually “Made in USA”. How awesome is that?
