Beauty at Home: Anti-Aging Light Therapy Facial Mask with illuMask (review)

(sponsored post)

Words can not explain how excited I become when I hear of a new beauty product on the market. My love of all things beauty stems way back to childhood when I used to play with my mother’s makeup. I never lost that love for makeup over the years, if anything that love has grown deeper and expanded to include everything beauty related. I’m constantly trying out new products. How else am I to know whether I like that particular beauty product or not?

Not too long ago, I hit the dreaded 30 year mark. It wasn’t a very welcoming birthday to say the least. As I am now officially in my “30’s”, I’ve noticed a lot has been changing with my body, my hair, and most of all my skin. Everyone tells you in your 20’s to take good care of your skin that the wrinkles, fine lines, and signs of aging are just around the corner but honestly in your 20’s that information kind of just goes in one ear and out the other. Had I really known back then what I know now, I definitely would have put a better effort into my skincare routine. But it’s never too late to start, right?

When I was asked to try out a brand new product to hit the shelves at Walmart as a part of the Walmart Moms called the illuMask, like with most beauty products, I could hardly wait. One of my favorite things to do is have my “spa time at home”. I try to at least once a week do something to pamper myself whether it be relaxing in a bubble bath, painting my nails, applying a nourishing hair mask, or just shaving my legs. I think it is so important to take a little time out of your busy schedule to pamper yourself. In a household of all boys, I look forward to these little bits of “girl time” where I can just relax and focus on myself.

The illuMask is unlike any other product I’ve seen in-stores. It isn’t like a typical facial mask that you may be thinking of. It isn’t something that you apply to your skin rather it is a device that you wear. Each mask is specifically designed with 30 treatments. A single treatment lasts for 15 minutes. On the outside of the mask it looks like a plain, white shield. While the inside of the mask contains specifically designed lights that illuminate both visible red light and invisable infrared light in the case of the anti-aging mask that I tried out. The illuMask offers anti-aging phototherapy in the comforts of your own home.

How to use the illuMask

The illuMask is so simple to use. All one does it place the illuMask on the face like you would a pair of sunglasses. Press the button for 1 second, you’ll notice the lights come on when you are wearing the mask. After 15 minutes the illuMask will automatically shut off and the counter on the controller will be reduced. There are 30 treatments in all.

My first reaction after using the illuMask is how incredibly relaxing it is. Using this mask forces you to slow down and take a moment for yourself. My favorite way to use the mask is lying down in a comfortable position with my favorite songs playing on my favorite pair of headphones. After about 4 songs or so, the treatment is over and one can go back to their daily routine. I’ve found that doing the illuMask treatments at night is a great way to unwind from the stresses of the day and once my treatment is complete I’m relaxed and ready for a refreshing night of sleep.

So what about those lights? At first I noticed them, it’s kind of hard not to notice the red light. I could open and close my eyes without it really bothering me while wearing the mask. I prefer to use the mask with my eyes closed though. They do not get hot and it’s easy to breathe while wearing the mask. By the last few treatments I would fall asleep during my 15 minute treatment that is how relaxed I had become.

The illuMask is available both in-store and online at Walmart for $29.97. There are currently two varieties of illuMask to choose from one for anti-aging (which is the one that I tried) and one for anti-acne.

After using all of the treatments on the sample mask I was given, I did see some difference in my skin. While it is winter and this is the time of year that I typically see my freckles fade, I thought that this mask helped to give my skin a more even appearance with a slight glow. My skin seems brighter to me when I look in the mirror right before applying my makeup. One of my “problem areas” is the area on either side of my nose. To me it has a weird texture. After using the mask I noticed a personal difference in this area as well. It seemed smoother. My forehead wrinkles are a little less noticeable as well. I tried my best to take a good before and after photo but it didn’t seem to work out the way that I had hoped. Despite the color difference between the two photos above, one can still see the difference in my freckles (which are all over my face), my forehead area, and the area right next to my nose after the treatments.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed trying out this mask. Each night I looked forward to another 15 minute treatment and was a bit sad after my last treatment was over. Using this mask taught me to take better care of my skin. It is recommended to wash and dry your face before beginning a treatment with illuMask. While most nights I’m just too tired to remove my makeup, when I was using illuMask I would make that little bit of extra effort to remember to wash my face before going to bed. The only thing that I didn’t like about this mask was that after 30 treatments, it’s done. So if you wanted to use this mask longer than 30 days, you’d have to buy a whole new mask.
