Spring time is all about getting outside to enjoy some time in the sun and just relax. I love Spring. It has the most perfect weather, sights, and sounds. Spring gives me the excuse to finally get some outdoor time and enjoy a little garden therapy. At the end of a very long day, I love nothing more than relaxing on our deck. Our deck is one of my most favorite places to be. Just sitting in this space is relaxing. When the weather is nice we sometimes enjoy doing our homeschool studies on the deck or enjoy a meal together as a family. Our deck is the perfect place to end the day so I, of course, want to make it as warm, inviting, and comfortable as I can.
When Walmart challenged me to create something for Spring as a part of the Walmart Moms, I immediately thought of creating something for a deck space. I’m sure many others enjoy entertaining or just hanging out on their deck space just as much as we do, so I thought I would create something that is both beautiful to look at as well as functional. So I took a visit to the garden department at my local Walmart to see all of the new Spring products that they have in stock.
While there I stumbled upon a Trelis Stand that holds 3 pots for $18.97. This decent sized stand I thought would be perfect for a deck space big or small. When I saw it I immediately thought of using it to grow herbs. So I found 3 small pots that would fit the trelis for just $.97 each and then it was on to finding what kinds of herbs I wanted to grow.
When I think of relaxing on the deck after a long day, drinks immediately come to mind. There is nothing that I love more after a long day than to sit back, relax, and sip on a big glass of Southern Sweet Tea. So while looking at the herbs at Walmart, I wanted to find some herbs that I could add to our Spring Time drinks! Two herbs immediately caught my eye by Bonnie Plants: Lemon Balm and Chocolate Mint. I’ve heard of regular mint before but chocolate mint sounded extra delicious! Each herb plant was only $3.58 at Walmart. In the past I’ve had pretty good success with growing my own herbs. They are fairly easy to maintain, just make sure to keep them watered and I like that I can use them in my cooking or in the case of the lemon balm and chocolate mint in our drinks as well. To add a pop of color to our deck refreshment stand, I also picked up a gorgeous flowering plant at Walmart called Callibrachoa which has beautiful purple flowers. It was only $3.98. Walmart had a good variety of flowering plants to choose from in a variety of different colors to match any garden theme.
Once I had all of the elements for our DIY Spring Time Refreshment Stand, it was time to put it all together. The stand was easy to set up as it has legs on either side that fold out for easy standing. Next, I potted each of the herb plants and the flowering plant into the pots that I found at Walmart that fit the Trelis stand. I used some Miracle Grow soil that I already had on hand which is what I typically use to grow my plants in. Once all of my plants were planted in their designated pots it was time to add them to our trelis. Again this is another easy step as the trelis stand has 3 round loops that twist out to hold the potted plants. I placed flowering plant in the center loop and the herbs on the top and bottom loops. Originally I had the trelis placed next to a wall but found that it looked better next to the sitting area on our deck. It’s like a vertical garden!
What I like about this project is that it doesn’t take a long time to put it all together. In less than an afternoon, one can create a beautiful DIY Spring Time Refreshment Stand to enjoy the next time your are relaxing on the deck or entertaining with friends. Not only is it beautiful to look at but it is also useful to freshen up your spring time drinks. Lemon Balm is said to be a great lemon compliment to tea and fruit drinks while the Chocolate Mint is best in coffee and hot chocolate.
