Like Mom, kids also like to get creative. If Mom is in the kitchen cooking, the little ones definitely want to help to. When it comes to crafting it is no different. I know when my kids see me crafting something they want to tackle their own project as well. If you have a budding fashionista in your family or if you enjoy sewing yourself, you may be interested in this trendy toy that is also a part of Walmart’s Chosen by Kids Top 20 Toy List. As a part of the Walmart Moms, I was sent the Spin Master Sew Cool Sewing Machine for my kids and I to try out for ourselves. The age range for the Sew Cool Machine is 8+. The Sew Cool Machine runs off of 4 AA batteries that are not included. This is good because the unit can be taken from room to room to room or over to a friends house and you don’t have to worry about finding a wall unit to plug into. The Sew Cool Machine does come with quite a bit to get you started creating. There are 8 sheets of Sew Cool fabric, 3 Sew Cool pre-cut featured projects, 1 Sew Cool strap, 14 pre-cute decorative pieces, 8 plastic buttons, 1 bag of loose stuffing, 1 instruction guide on how to use the machine, and 6 extra project patterns to create your own. With this many additional materials, I can see children creating with the Sew Cool machine for hours on end.
How does the Sew Cool Sewing Machine work?
Believe it or not, this machine is completely threadless! What a sewing machine that is threadless? Yes that’s right. This is why this machine is great for kids because you don’t have to worry about threading the needle, winding the bobbin, etc. I know when it comes to sewing with a machine myself, I often get so frustrated with changing out thread so I like that the Sew Cool eliminates this frustration for kids so they can just have fun sewing.
Something also different about a Sew Cool machine versus a regular sewing machine is that there is no foot peddle. There is a large blue button on the front of the machine that when pressed turns on a light underneath the needles and the needles automatically begin their sewing motion. There is no need to constant push the button either. One push and the machine starts. Another push turns the machine off. There is a main switch in the back the completely turns the unit off so if the buttons are accidentally pushed the machine won’t start. I liked this feature as well, because I can see how it would be difficult for a child to feed fabric through the Sew Cool Machine as well as keep a button pushed. So I like the one push start and stop so that kids can concentrate on following the printed guide on the fabric.
Another concern parents may have are the needles. Don’t be worried though as there is a needle guard around the needles so that little hands won’t accidentally get under the needles. The area underneath the needles is only large enough for two pieces of the special Sew Cool fabric to fit underneath.
After trying out the Sew Cool Sewing Machine with my youngest son, we both had a blast creating a “Mommy Owl” using the owl plush pattern included in the kit. Helping him guide the pattern through the machine, he was able to create this fun little craft and now he has a cute little owl stuffed animal that we both created together and some fun memories of the process. However, the Sew Cool Sewing Machine is definitely geared more towards girls. Because each project doesn’t take very long to complete I think it does a great job of keeping a child’s interest.
As a parent, I like the build in safety features and that an older child can easily use it. I think the best part about the Sew Cool Sewing Machine besides it being fun for kids to create with is that at Walmart it is only $24.99 (was $34.97). Layaway at Walmart is still available until Dec. 15th which is a great way to “hide those gifts” a little bit longer. Also, don’t forget to scan your receipt into Savings Catcher on the Walmart App which will check competitors printed ads and match the price for an identical item so you know you are getting the lowest price in your area.
