Tornado Aftermath

May 13, 2008 Author: The Domestic Diva | Filed under: Domestic Duties

Here is a slideshow of some of the photos I have taken of the Tornado Damage that struck my new home on Mother’s Day….

Please keep us all in your prayers. Also, check out my husband’s point of view on the whole tornado thing as well to see more photos of the destruction!

I got a TORNADO for Mother’s Day

May 12, 2008 Author: The Domestic Diva | Filed under: Domestic Duties

Tornado Damage: Hotel SignYes, you read that right. For Mother’s Day all I got was a TORNADO to destroy my future home of residence. My new home, well would have been in a month, was hit by three F2 tornadoes. Just about every single tree is down in the area. Most of the trees took down the power lines, others landed on houses or cars. Only one person has been reported dead so that is a good thing. There is no power and it looks as if there won’t be any power for a week or two. My parents home had so many trees fall down or uproot that you couldn’t even see the grass.

The damage from the tornadoes are unreal. It looks like a photo from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I swear to you, I can not even exaggerate it is that bad. The house that we are supposed to be moving into also took a good bit of damage. There was a deck on the back of the house that is just gone. I huge tree fell on it and in the process ripped a hole in the roof as well as take the whole part of the roof in the back off! I guess this will be delaying our moving plans. We just had the house retiled and new carpets put in.

So I just wanted to give you guys a little bit of a heads up just in case I am unable to post for the rest of the week. I am cleaning up storm damage and will probably be without power for a week. Just about every single power line has been taken down by a tree.

Since we have no power nor internet access, I am on the northside of town at a coffee shop, I have been taking lots of photos of the damage and chaos all over town. I will have them uploaded on flickr whenever I get back home which will be after I clean up our new home in hopes of making it able to be moved into by the end of the month.

Please keep us in your prayers!!!

Yard Sale @ the Divas House

May 10, 2008 Author: The Domestic Diva | Filed under: Domestic Duties

So some of you may be wondering…Where did she go? Why hasn’t she updated? What is going on? Well the fact of the matter is that I have been dying to update but I have been too gosh darn busy too. You see I spoke before about moving and about how we needed to have a yard sale. Well, I got as much stuff together as I could and just went for it this weekend.

I think we did pretty good, we even sold our COUCH! Yes, seriously. We have no where to sit right now but that is Ok because that just means that I get to buy a new couch when I move. I am so excited, I am leaning toward either brown leather or red!!!

So all proceeds that we made at the yard sale will go towards adding new touches to our new home.

I will back on my regularly scheduled postings on Monday. Tomorrow is Mother’s Day, don’t forget to hug your Mama. I am taking a break from everything and laying in the fat wad of dough I made at my first ever yard sale with dreams of new furniture dancing in my head.

MeToday: A Date with Myself

May 5, 2008 Author: The Domestic Diva | Filed under: Domestic Duties

Mom's Date with a MovieSince I haven’t made a MeToday video in what seems like forever, I opted to make one today because today was a HUGE day for me. I got to get out of the house without a single kidlet or hubby hanging off my arm. Where did I go? To a nice relaxing movie!!! Yes that is right, this Diva went to a movie by herself and it was fabulous!!! Check out the video below for more details….

Baby Mama is a cute funny movie that will make you feel good for going to see it in the end. But if you don’t want to spring on the $5 it takes to go see the matinee then I would definitely rent it when it comes out on DVD to watch on a Friday night while painting your toes and having your hair in rollers.

Downsizing

May 5, 2008 Author: The Domestic Diva | Filed under: Domestic Duties

DownsizingIf you missed the first announcement, chances are that we will moving yet again. It is pretty much official that we will be moving within the next month or so. In hopes of preparing, we are doing a little downsizing here at the Diva household. We will be moving into a smaller house so we need to get rid of some things to make room for the necessary things. One of the first steps we have taken is going through all of the boys toys and cut everything by half. That is right, the boys have half as much crap as they used to have and I swear they can’t tell the difference. The second step we have taken, which is a pretty big one as me being a mama is that we got rid of my youngest sons highchair and have him in a booster seat at the table with the rest of the family. He loves sitting at the table with us but it is also a little bittersweet for me because my baby is no longer a little baby. He is growing up way too fast! If you don’t know this is our last child since hubby and I have both been “fixed” so we are trying to hold on to our little baby as much as we possibly can.

I am going through each room this week getting rid of unnecessary stuff in hopes of making one kick ass yard sale this weekend. Well, now I am off to get the boys down for their naps and I get to sneak off for a special event. I will let you know more details when I come back.

Global Warming…Don’t believe the hype

May 4, 2008 Author: The Domestic Diva | Filed under: Domestic Duties

A reader of mine emailed me an article entitled Ecophobia: Environmentalists as the New Environmental Disaster by Colin Flaherty that she found in one of her newspapers the other day that I find to be absolutely hilarious and right up my alley. You may recall a recent rant of mine concerning the need for discounts and the use of reusable shopping bags well thank goodness I am not alone in this thinking. Apparently this writer thinks that environmentalists are fueling our environmental disaster. Like I have stated before, I really am not all for this whole eco-friendly trip that everyone has been on lately. I only go green if it saves me money,as selfish (or stupid as one person put it) as that might be, otherwise it is just a whole bunch of hype that I am in no need of hearing. My husband and I have two separate views on this issue. He is all for the eco-hoopla, I on the other hand not so much. There may or may not be global warming, I for one think that it is all a big marketing ploy for us tiny consumers to spend more money on “better” products or services as well as keep our minds occupied with other issues instead of the real issue. What the real issues are, I shall not get into that, but still it is a marketing ploy to get us all to spend more money in hopes of saving the planet, money that most of us do not have to give away.
I will quote one line that I think the author of the article said so beautifully. This is something we all should be thinking about before we all get suckered into this whole “eco-gonna hug a tree B.S.”.

I am an ecophobe: I imagine environmentalists creating catastrophes all the time all over the world. I see great floods, famine, disease and death and behind each is the same thing: A grinning environmentalist reveling in the mayhem as if it were magic. -Colin Flaherty

You can form your own opinions about the whole global warming hype that everyone seems to be on lately but I seriously encourage you to do all the research that you can on your own for facts on both sides of the story before you form your own opinion and start believing all the hype. For starters you can start by googling “doubts about global warming”.

Just a few things to think about. Don’t forget to read the article. Let me know what you think about the whole global warming craze? Do you believe the hype? What are you doing to go eco-friendly?

Atlanta Braves vs. Cincinnatti Reds

May 3, 2008 Author: The Domestic Diva | Filed under: Domestic Duties

Atlanta Braves GameLast night my family and I went to an Atlanta Braves game. I had given my husband an Atlanta Braves giftcard at Christmas to use in the spring to hopefully see his favorite player, Ken Griffy Jr. Well sure enough, Jr. was in town and so were we. What sucks is that at Christmas time you aren’t allowed to buy tickets in advance so, I had to give him a giftcard in hopes that when the time does come around for whatever team he wants to see that they wouldn’t be completely sold out. The crowd at the ball park was rather small, not a whole lot of folks out on a Friday night, I suppose. But anyway, me and the boys had so much fun. We did the wave, at all that we could because we had all you can eat seats, and watched crazy people almost get caught by security.

I hope to be able to go to another game soon! Baseball is so much more interesting when you are there in person versus watching it on television. There was one play though that me and my husband could have sworn we were going to be on television for but we were too blurry for you to even tell it was us. Oh well maybe next time!

Oh and before I forget, you can see all of the photos that I took at the game on my flickr album.

I like Plastic BagsSo I was standing in line at a local store, today, eyeballing the dollar reusable shopping bags and sure enough when I go to checkout the lady behind the counter gives me her typical marketing ploy to try to get me to buy one of these “eco-friendly” bags to try to “give back” to good ol’ mother earth. I looked at the lady and said “So what will you give ME?” She couldn’t answer me naturally but it got me to thinking. Why should I buy and use an eco-friendly reusable shopping bag if I get nothing in return. I’m talking discounts people. Why should I go out of my comfort zone, pay the normal price as everyone else, struggle to take goo-gobs of bags into the store, when I get absolutely zip in return. This whole eco-friendly, I wanna save the planet trip everyone is on is great but it is only great if it is going to save me money. Know what I’m saying?

This is what I propose to companies that are looking to push the whole eco-friendly use your own bags gig, give us discounts! We all know that the price of plastic bags are factored into the price of the items that we buy in stores. So why should I pay for something I am not using? Do you see where I am going here. If we don’t use plastic bags and opt to use our own reusable shopping bags then we should be getting a discounts for the plastic bags we are not using.

I’m just saying, I will go all eco-greener than your thumb, wanna hug a tree but you gotta give me some sort of incentive to do so. If I am going to go out of my comfort zone and away from convenience it will only be at the price of a discount. Until stores start noticing and start giving the consumers discounts for not using plastic bags, I strongly doubt this whole use your own reusable bag mess will ever take off.

The Day is Finally Here

Apr 16, 2008 Author: The Domestic Diva | Filed under: Domestic Duties

The day that I have been anticipating for the past month is finally here. I am on my way to the airport to board my first flight ever! Well I flew in an airplane for about 30 minutes when I was a wee little tot but that doesn’t count, to me at least. I am so nervous. I am totally faaaah-reaking OUT!!!

I can’t believe this is happening. It all seems like a dream. I know I probably sound like the biggest dork known to man and completely immature for my age but stuff like this doesn’t happen to people like me. It just doesn’t. This IS the biggest trip of my life and I will be enjoying (and photographing) every minute of it!!!

Hubby will be taking care of the kidlets while I am away. The boys are a handful but I am more than confident that he can handle them, although he will probably be begging me to come back tomorrow. LOL. Men are so funny when it comes to taking care of the kids. If you think I am freaking out, you should see my husband he is worse off than me.

Well it is almost time to head to the airport. Going to check through my luggage one last time to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything and then I’m off! I’ll give you all updates tonight.
