Every home cook needs a good southern sweet cornbread recipe. Learn a southerner’s secret to moist, perfectly sweetened cornbread every time.
Sweet Southern Cornbread Recipe for Dinner
Now, the argument can be made that cornbread shouldn’t be sweet. But, here in the south we definitely will disagree.
Cornbread is a staple as a bread option for most southern suppers. Visit any southern-style restaurant and you’ll be presented with the option of a roll, biscuit, or cornbread with your meal.
There is always some sort of bread served with dinner in the south. Always. Even if it is just a slice of sandwich bread.
Easy Old Fashioned Cornbread Recipe using Jiffy
It’s true that we like our food sweet here in the south.
It’s true for southern sweet tea and it’s definitely true when it comes to our cornbread.
Some would argue that sweet southern cornbread is almost like cake. While our biscuits may be savory our cornbread definitely satisfies the sweet tooth.
The best sweet cornbread recipe always starts with Jiffy cornbread mix.
I like to use Jiffy cornbread mix because they have done all of the hard work for you. All you need to do is add a few ingredients like eggs and milk then stir in some frozen corn to always bake moist cornbread every single time.
Moist Cornbread better than Cornbread Souffle
This recipe is unlike any other as it has frozen corn added to the mix. The use of the frozen corn is the secret to always having a moist cornbread.
This recipe sort of resembles a cornbread souffle in how moist it is but will stay together when sliced.
If you ever wanted to know how to make moist jiffy cornbread, this recipe is it. As the cornbread cooks the frozen corn adds some much needed extra moisture to the cornbread. This is the easiest way to dress up boxed cornbread to make the best jiffy cornbread.
Southern Cornbread Recipe with Corn
Yep, you read that right. Cornbread with actual corn in it!
Trust me on this. It is a game changer and the secret to the best southern sweet cornbread recipe you’ll ever make.
I haven’t always made sweet cornbread with actual corn in it, though. Adding corn into our cornbread is something that I learned from my father-in-law. My husband grew up on it and that’s how I’ve been making it ever since I met him to keep the tradition going.
Now you could use a drained can of corn in this recipe instead of frozen corn. But honestly, canned corn doesn’t even come close in taste like frozen corn does. Frozen corn tastes as close to fresh as you possibly can get. Which is why I will always opt for frozen vegetables over canned any day.
Sweet Southern Cornbread in Cast Iron Skillet
The use of a cast iron skillet is a southern tradition when it comes to making cornbread.
Do you absolutely have to use a cast iron skillet when making cornbread, absolutely not. You can use a regular baking dish if you would like.
Does using a cast iron skillet add to the flavor of a sweet cornbread recipe? I think so! Besides cooking with cast iron is known to have health benefits like its ability to add iron to your diet.
Whenever I make cornbread I always use a cast iron skillet. But if you don’t have a cast iron skillet or prefer not to use one, then you can use any small sized glass or metal baking dish.
