Hair plopping is not a new technique. It has been around for quite a while. Those with curly hair or followers of the Curly Girl Method have no doubt heard of hair plopping in some form or another. It has been almost 1 year since I decided to ditch everything I thought I knew about my hair and decided to give the Curly Girl Method a try. Today I thought I would share with you all how I “plop” my hair while I get ready after a shower. Please keep in mind that there are many different variations and techniques of hair plopping. This is just the way that I have found to be the easiest way for me to “plop” my wavy curly hair.
I plop my hair directly out of the shower. While my hair is still dripping wet from the shower, I’m talking directly after I turn the shower off I apply the products that I will be using that day. The products I typically apply to my wavy curly hair is a leave-in conditioner, a smoothing lotion, and either mousse or spray gel. I wrap my hair in my husband’s t-shirt, secure it to my head using the technique I showed you in the video above, and leave it there for approximately 30 minutes. While my hair is wrapped in the t-shirt it is allow the t-shirt to absorb the excess moisture and allowing the products that I applied to my hair to be absorbed. While the t-shirt is on my head, I will apply makeup and get dressed. After I’m done applying makeup and getting dressed, about 30 minutes or until I just can’t stand having the t-shirt on my head any longer, I will then remove it and allow my hair to completely air-dry.
Why use a t-shirt and not just a towel on curly hair?
A t-shirt is much smoother than a regular bath towel which means that it won’t pull, tug, or rough up your hair which helps reduce frizz. Friction leads to frizz so for curly wavy hair we want to eliminate as much friction as possible and one simple way to do that is by switching from a towel to a t-shirt or jersey knit fabric. A t-shirt is also less heavy to wear for an extended amount of time. I don’t know about you but I get a headache if I wear my hair wrapped in a regular towel for too long. The material that the t-shirt is made out of does a fantastic job of absorbing the excess water from your hair. So when you remove it after 30 minutes or so, your hair will not be dripping wet which will speed up the time it takes for your hair to air-dry.
