Starting the New Year off with giving my closet an organizational makeover has encouraged me to tackle other DIY projects I’ve had waiting on my to-do list. I know that the wood paneling inside my closet isn’t cute and while I would love to give my closet a fresh coat of paint, right now, just isn’t the time. Instead, I came up with another idea to give my closet a bit of a “face lift” when I saw this Zebra Print of this Peel & Stick Laminate by Duck browsing Walmart for some other organizational items. Here’s how I gave my dull, wood shelves a much needed pop of pattern.
What You’ll Need:
- Peel & Stick Laminate (decorative adhesive covering)
- Duck Tape in Accent Color
- Hard Ruler
First, I removed all of the shelves out of my closet. I took regular Duck Tape in black and applied it to the edges of each of my shelves.
When applying the Duck Tape to the edge of the shelves, I tried to apply it evenly to the edges so that the same amount of tape was on either side of the shelf.
After applying the Duck Tape to the edges of the shelf, I had a beautiful border of matching color to the laminate that I’m going to apply next.
Now onto the fun part…First I measured the peel & stick laminate to make sure it would fit between the black border on my shelves then I cut enough pieces of the laminate to cover both the top and bottom of my shelves. If the peel & stick laminate wasn’t wide enough, I just used extra black Duck Tape to fill in the extra wood showing through before I applied the laminate.
The best way I found to apply the Peel & Stick laminate to my shelves was to peel the backing completely off of the pre-cut laminate. Then very carefully line up one corner of the laminate to the corner on my shelf. With a hard ruler, I carefully stuck the laminate to my shelf smoothing out the air bubbles as I went.
I think the end result is super cute and definitely a little diva-licious :) It feels much better to the touch than the bare wood that I had for shelves previously.
Once I applied the laminate to all of the wood shelves from my closet, I could hardly wait to put all the shelves back to see the final, overall look! I’ll share with you all what I have planned to use these shelves for in a later blog post, so stay tuned!
