Are you done with all of your holiday shopping? Or are you looking for an easy DIY gift you can make to give as a gift? On a recent Walmart Moms trip I learned how to make a no-sew blanket that I think would make a perfect holiday gift for someone. This quick and easy DIY project takes about an hour or so to make and uses fabric that can be found in Walmart stores.
To make this blanket you will need two different fabrics. I chose the black Heavenly Plush fabric, which is new at Walmart, that feels amazing. Seriously, I wish you could touch this fabric and feel how soft and cozy it feels. Think of the softest teddy bear and that is exactly what it feels like. This fabric is perfect for making a blanket and comes in a variety of colors and patterns to choose from. To go with the black Heavenly Plush fabric, I chose the Bubble plush for its contrasting color and texture. The raised dotted pattern all over the fabric just gives the finished blanket a great finishing detail.
What You’ll Need to make a No-Sew Blanket
- 2 yards of 2 different fabrics (the softer the fabric the better): I chose the Heavenly Plush ($5.97/yd) & Bubble Plush ($6.97/yd) which are available in the fabric section at Walmart
- scissors
- large work space that can be cleaned easily (example: floor)

1. Cut Fabric to the Same Length. First lay out your 2 pieces of fabric so that the side you want shown is facing the outside. Choose a large area to work on if you are making a large blanket. I spread my fabric out on a carpeted floor so that I could easily vacuum up any fabric bits left behind after I was finished cutting. Also note, that when working with plush fabrics there will be a lot of “fluff” that comes off of the fabric once it is cut so when choosing your work surface keep in mind that it will need to be cleaned afterwards. Line up the fabric the best that you can and trim any excess fabric off so that both pieces of fabric are the same size.

2. Cut a Square out of all four corners. Cut off the corners in a square shape. I used the dots on the Bubble Plush fabric as my guide and cut the same number of dots on all four corners so that my squares were the same shape. One can also use a ruler to measure and cut if you would like.

3. Cut 2 inch strips and tie each strip together. Cut 2 inch strips along the edge of your fabric the same length as you square. Once you cut a strip, tie it in a double knot so it doesn’t come undone. Continue doing this, cutting and tieing, all along the edge of your fabric until all edges have been cut and tied. The finished result should resemble a blanket. If working with a plush fabric, carefully take it outside and shake off any excess “fluff” from cutting.

What are some other easy, diy projects that you recommend giving as a gift during the holidays?
Disclosure: As a participant in the Walmart Moms Program, I’ve been compensation for my time and efforts in creating this post as well as given samples of the products mentioned in this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own. My experience may differ from your own.
one question: does the plush fabric rip easily? I made one last night and the black plush rips so easily I am almost afraid of giving it as a gift but if they don’t pull on it I should be fine, correct? what are your thoughts on the plush fabric?
It has been a little while since I made this blanket. But from what I can remember, at the time the plush fabric did not rip as easily when I would cut it into wider strips. It seemed like the thinner strips would tend to want to rip more. Like I mentioned, it has been a few years since this post was written so there is also the possibility that the fabric I originally used in this tutorial, if you are using the same fabric, may have changed due to different manufacturing techniques. You could also try this tutorial with different types of fabrics and you will probably get the same type of results. I chose the plush fabric because of the softness of the material but you could easily do this tutorial with fleece or any other of your favorite types of fabric to get a similar looking blanket. I hope these tips help…and Happy Holidays!
I think that the material is different than a few years ago. I notice that the fleece, microfleece, plush, etc material works better if you buy the ones that have a “shiny” back to them on the underside instead of being plush/fleece on both sides. If you use the material that is plush/fleece on both sides then you definitely need to cut the strips wider and maybe even tie in more than a double knot.
Thank you Michelle, this helps a lot!
After making the blanket if there is still fluff coming off of the blanket what do you do?
It has been several years since I made this blanket but I think I took it outside and shook it as much as I could to try to get all of the fluff off that I could shake off. I do know that if you try to wash it, it will more than likely shrink so be aware of that.
After I make these blankets I throw them into the dryer on air only and run it about 20 – 30 mins. Takes care of any fluff left.
Thank you so much for this tip. It has been several years since I made one of these blankets. I’ll keep this in mind the next time I make one, myself.
Can you use fleece and joe lush together to make a tie blanket
Possibly. I know fleece tie blankets are very popular to make. Could be a great combination, fleece and the plush fabric together.
