Give the Gift of Sheer Cover

22 December 2009 8 Comments Disclosure

I was recently approached by a representative for Sheer Cover who wanted me to write a story about my experience with the brand on my blog. With the kit that they sent me, I got to work testing it out. I don’t mind being a guinea pig when it comes to makeup ^_^. Several weeks later, I’m ready to share my experience.

Testing out a new powder mineral foundation for a future blog... on TwitpicAt first I must admit that Sheer Cover was a bit strange or foreign to me. I am not at all a new user of mineral powder foundations. I’ve talked several times about how I live for the stuff. I do honestly think it is better than liquid foundation and will probably stick with some form of mineral powder foundation from here on out. But anyway that is besides the point, back to Sheer Cover. So in the box that was sent to me I got the Light Sheer Cover makeup kit which included two shades of mineral foundation, two shades of concealer, a full set of brushes, mineral mascara, as well as a (travel sized) cleanser and a moisturizer. The rep even put in an additional shade of mineral powder foundation called “frost” in case the Light mineral makeup kit was too dark for my winter skin. Well what do you know, when I started testing to find my exact shade the rep was totally on the money with this one. I knew that I was “see-through” but didn’t want to admit (to myself) that I was that fair skinned. But for me the “frost” (the bonus foundation the rep through in) was actually my exact shade despite my hopes of being a bit darker (aka I think I need a tan). So now if anyone asks me what my skin tone color is, well I can just tell them I’m “frosty like snow white”….ROFL.

Now onto the actual using the product part…
Cleaning my skin with the (travel size) conditioning cleanser was a different kind of experience. This cleanser didn’t foam. It was just smooth and not lathery at all. I actually kind of liked the change. Did it keep my skin from being dry out of the shower? Well no not really. I still had a tight feeling. But straight from the shower I applied the (travel size) Nourishing Moisturizer with SPF 15 to combat the dryness which seemed to moisturize a bit. Although I think I could use a bit more moisture, we are in the middle of winter afterall.

I could totally go to sleep out here :P it's so nice out and ... on TwitpicSo after all the dirt and junk was washed off, I began with a cleansed palette. (I love referring to my face as a palette, a beautiful canvas in which to paint.) I first prepped my problem areas with the concealer, some of which being my extremely dark circles under my eyes, redness around my nose, and the occasional blemish (or aftermath of a blemish depending on what time of the month it is…aka I have hormonal acne). I liked the concealer brush in this step. It really helped to put the creamy concealer in specific areas on my face.

After I hid my unsightly blemishes, I took the contour brush dipped in some mineral powder foundation and went over the areas that I just concealed with the concealer in order to “seal” the concealer and offer a bit more coverage in those areas. I am not sure if that is what you are “supposed” to do, but that is what I do.

After concealing it is onto the mineral foundation part. Like I mentioned before the two shades in the light kit were too dark for my winter skin so I have to use the additional mineral foundation provided to me by Sheer Cover. I will say that the Studio powder brush was kind of weird to use. I’m used to applying mineral foundation with a kabuki type brush because with my freckled skin I like to offer as much coverage as possible. But I went with the flow and started using the Studio Powder Brush and after a week or so I didn’t crave my need for the kabuki any longer. Was I converted? Maybe momentarily. (I haven’t tried applying the Sheer Cover with a kabuki brush so I do not know which brush would be better to use).

Sheer Cover is very light, that is what I love the most about this product. I did not feel like I had makeup caked on my face. The longevity of the makeup seemed to be pretty decent as well. What I did love was that I didn’t have the need to apply a finishing powder. Sheer Cover was two steps, conceal then foundation and I’m done. Price wise it can be kind of steep compared to drugstore makeup and the availability only being either online or over the phone can be kind of a drag if you all of a sudden run out of product and don’t have anything on backup. Overall though, I think I’ll give Sheer Cover a thumbs up in my beauty bag.

What is your favorite brand of mineral powder foundation?

Disclosure: A Sheer Cover makeup kit and additional mineral foundation shade was given to me by the representatives of the company in order to offer my personal opinion of these products on this blog. Everyday minerals. Fo sho. I’ve tried every single one out there.

I have to say Sheer Cover was ok but like you, I am extremely pale and their shades were way too dark for me (I don’t think they had frost back then). I also found it too sheer for my freckly skin.

@mcmammajama, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Everyday Minerals. I’ll have to look into it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Be sure to test it out for FREE first! You can order a free sample kit (just pay postage) with 5 little pots of foundation, concealer etc so you can keep ordering until you find your perfect match. You’ll never waste money on a shade that doesn’t suit you again.

@mcmammajama, that is a good idea. The kit they sent me had a sample card to figure out which shade to use but I had no idea you could order an actual sample kit.

That looks like a great product. I wonder if they ship samples to Canada?

@Sandy, I have no idea. Hopefully you can find out something from their website though.

My fave is Mary Kay Mineral Powder Foundation… Being a Mary Kay Consultant and all. :)

@Jacklyn, ah but of course. I’ll have to add that to my list of powder foundations to try out. I plan to go through them all :)
