The other day I was at the farmer’s market when we spotted a bag of peanuts. Some of the kidlets said they wanted some boiled peanuts so we picked up a bag and headed home. Even though I live in the south and have grown up eating boiled peanuts, that doesn’t necessarily mean I know what the appropriate ratio of salt to water it takes to make them. So upon googling, I stumbled upon the recipe that I thought would work best for us. This recipe from about.com uses a crockpot, peanuts, water and salt. Easy and simple. Put it all in the crockpot and let simmer until done. We did ours overnight so the next day we were ready to eat our peanuts.

And they tasted delicious!

We had an interesting conversation on twitter about boiled peanuts, who all has heard of them, who likes to eat them, and where you can buy them. So I thought I’d ask my readers too…

Do you like boiled peanuts? Have you ever made them at home or do you buy them?

We love boiled peanuts too! Anytime they have fresh ones at the store we put them in the crock pot too. We add soy sauce instead of salt for a bit more flavor.

@Mcmammajama, hmmm I wonder if hubby would like them better with soy sauce. We’ll have to give it a try on our next batch. How much soy sauce do you use instead of salt?

How do they differ from unboiled? I agree soy sauce kicks up the flavor in things. I made a soy sauce turkey brine last Thanksgiving, it was so flavorful!

@Sheena, my husband, who is from up north, says that they taste like salty blackeyed peas. To me they do not taste like peanuts at all. I can’t stand the taste of a peanut that isn’t smushed into peanut butter.
