Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I love playing dress up, curling up on the couch watching scary movies with my husband, and all the other fun fall activities that this time of year brings.
Halloween Decorations for Less at Walmart
I was recently asked by Walmart to share how my family does Halloween for less. With the giftcard they provided, I headed out to my local store to see what all I could find to decorate our home for Halloween. Before going to the store, I had no idea what I wanted to do. After I got there though, the ideas began running through my brain. They had a huge selection of costumes but today we weren’t there for the costumes, we were there for the decorations. I was immediately drawn to the flowers they had displayed in front of the store. Upon searching the flower department I found 3 mums/flowering plants in beautiful fall/Halloween type colors. Instead of getting 1 large flowering pot (that was made up of 3 different plants) I decided to stretch my dollar and get 3 smaller plants that I could spread out in our Halloween display. I placed the red and orange flowers on the steps and another purple flowering plant inside a carved pumpkin, which I’ll talk about in just a few moments. I think the flowers, in fall colors, add a nice feminine touch to the Halloween Outdoor space. The flowers also help our home feel more warm and inviting. For those of you that are wondering, no I did not put these flowers in a flower pot. I kept them in the original container and water them as needed. Also any dead flowers or leaves that I find I immediately pull off to help the flowers last a bit longer (this process is called deadheading).
Back to the Halloween aisles, I started combing through the decorations and stumbled upon plastic tape type stuff that were green with the words “Haunted House” and orange with the wording “Warning” on them. At a dollar a piece you couldn’t beat this Halloween decoration find. I bought a couple of each color and used them to decorate our entry way in several different ways. First, with the help of my trusty friend Sticky Tack (you know that blue stuff teachers use to put posters up on the wall with), I cut and then stuck this “tape” in alternating colors on one of our doors. Secondly, I also used them as “signs” in various places around our home. I opted to use Sticky Tack instead of tape because 1. tape can be a little annoying to work with after a while and 2. the Sticky Tack can easily be removed after Halloween is over. You can see what I’m talking about in the photo below:
Next, I came across a
lovely pillow and throw set (which were only $10 at my local store, what a deal!). Immediately, I thought what a great way to spruce up our outdoor lounge area.
Without much effort on my part, I was able to take the matching pillow & throw set and wrap it around my existing seat cushion to instantly transform the space from summer to Halloween. To personalize our Halloween space, I took an old piece of plexiglass I had laying around the house that actually used to go on top of an old desk that we had, sprayed it with Chalkboard Paint, dressed it up with some halloween garland, and turned it into a fun outdoor message board for our guests (the area in which this sits is covered so there is no threat of harsh outdoor elements). And of course Halloween is not complete without a little pumpkin carving.
Actually, I was quite amazed at how affordable the pumpkins were at my local store and at a pretty decent size too. To make our pumpkins a bit more “funky” for the daytime, I took the third potted plant (that I mentioned at the beginning of this article, the purple one) and stuck it in the center of our carved pumpkin. At night we can replace the flowers with a pumpkin light if we so choose.
Halloween is not complete without SPIDERS!!!
Those fake spider webs, you know the ones that come in a bag, are perhaps the cheapest, easiest, and most fun way for us to decorate for Halloween. We used one bag + a box of fake spider rings to surround our porch in creepy crawlies. With the leftover web, I used
Command Picture Hanging Strips to create a separate spider web on a blank wall with one giant spider that I found at Walmart.
My husband’s slight arachnophobia will never be the same.
Looking for a cheap, inexpensive way to add some “creepy” to your door?
In the photo above you will see a photo of a door I decorated for Halloween with a cheap $1 black plastic table cloth. How did I do it? I attached the tablecloth to the door with Sticky Tack, then I cut around the door with a pair of scissors. To add the “creepy” factor I cut out eyeball shapes out of regular white paper (or you can use construction paper), drew the pupils of the eyes in random patterns with a marker, and taped them to the door. It was easy and didn’t cost a lot to make. With the leftover table cloth pieces you can even make window decorations by cutting out various silhouettes of things like bats, cats, or even a haunted house.
Despite all that we did, we couldn’t forget about the most important part.
THE CANDY! Our Walmart store had a great selection of candy as well as a selection of bowls to put them in.
So that pretty much wraps up how we decorated for less with Walmart. I hope I was able to explain how we did things clearly and the photos offer a better visual of the final result.
