I recently talked about bringing the outdoors into my home in a previous post by adding potted houseplants to my home decor. Another way that one can easily bring that outdoor element indoors is with a fish aquarium. I’ve always loved having a pet fish. There is just something about incorporating a fish aquarium into a home that can bring an element of relaxation to your living space. I could literally sit and watch a fish swim for hours. Aquariums are not only beautiful on their own but a fish tank is a great way to add a personal touch to a room’s decor.
Setting up a fish tank is simple. PetSmart carries a variety of sizes of fish tanks both in their stores as well as online so finding the perfect sized tank is easy. For your first fish tank, I would highly recommend purchasing a starter kit that includes everything you need to set up your first aquarium like a pump, light, and water treatment. You can easily find a fish tank to match the look you are going for whether it be something small for your desk or a kid’s room to something larger for a living space at home. One of my favorite aspects about fish aquariums these days is that most of them come with LED lights. Not only are LED lights more affordable for the electric bill but they are also beautifully bright, which helps to make your fish tank stand out even more in your room.
I like that PetSmart carries everything I need to set up and maintain my fish tank from live fish to gravel and decorations to food. When it comes to setting up your new fish tank, keep the decorations simple. Start with a base of aquarium rocks in a color to match your existing room decor then add faux plants (or real ones) and lastly add a few aquarium ornaments for fish to play in. When choosing decorations for your fish tank, stick with a theme or keep it natural. You can easily make it your own by adding pops of your favorite color in the decorations that you choose.
When picking the perfect fish aquarium for your home or office, you definitely want to keep in mind the type of fish you are looking to get. Do you want a freshwater or saltwater fish? PetSmart carries a variety of fish in their stores, both freshwater and saltwater. Most of our fish for our home aquariums have come from PetSmart.
I would love to have a different fish tank in every room of our home but for now we currently only have two. One is located in my home office/homeschool room while the other is in my youngest son’s room. My son loves his Betta fish and the responsibility of taking care of him. He loves nature and being outdoors so I think he really enjoys having that water element in his room. I think Betta fish are a great first fish for kids because they are easy to take care of. Betta fish also make for great office companions as their aquariums can remain quite small and they are relatively low maintenance. Other fish may require larger tanks so it’s best to do your research first or you can easily ask a sales associate at PetSmart for recommendations as I have done many times.
In my office, downstairs in the basement, is where our other fish tank is located. This is a slightly larger 5-gallon tank that has a beautiful goldfish in it. The decorations inside the tank match the room’s decor so it blends in beautifully. I love how this fish tank easily adds life to this room. Having my office in our basement can often feel very dark but the fish tank brings that light element and a bit of nature into this space.
Lastly, you want to remember to not overstock your tank with fish. Each fish requires a certain amount of space, which will vary depending on the particular type of fish plus the size of the tank. For example, my 5-gallon tank can only hold about 2 small goldfish but nothing more because the ammonia level in the water can get too high with too many fish in the same tank. If you are unsure the amount of fish you can have in your tank, don’t be afraid to ask a sales associate at PetSmart for their recommendation.
